SUMMARY:

Comics (Comics) are a means of communication characterized by the combined use of text and sequential images to build narratives. Due to its reach and potential for studies in different areas, in recent years, the growth of academic research on this means of communication has been observed from different perspectives and areas of knowledge. Therefore, the research sought to characterize the studies on comics, based on the national scientific communication published in the period from 2018 to 2020. This is descriptive research, regarding the ends, and bibliographic research, regarding the means. Its corpus consists of national scientific articles on comics published from 2018 to 2020, indexed in the open access databases ScienceOpen and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and published in the journal 9ª Arte. It uses content analysis techniques to identify the intrinsic characteristics of the studies and trace relationships between texts and categories, highlighting trends and directions of research on comics. In addition, the organization of the texts also made it possible to present statistical results that complement the analysis. Thus, there was a growth in the publication of comics studies in the analyzed period and a greater concentration of journals published in the Southeast region. As for the content analysis, there was a greater number of studies that propose the practical application of comics as a didactic tool in the classroom. Studies aimed at investigating social and cultural aspects, language and content of comics also deserve to be highlighted. Aspects related to technique and aesthetics, historical contexts, market and reception of comics are still little explored in research. From this perspective, it is concluded that the analyzed studies contribute to the legitimation of comics as an artistic and cultural product, contribute to its valorization as an object of academic study, as well as to the development and strengthening of the scientific field of comics
