SUMMARY:

It identifies the memory as act of referencing which has relevance in the contexto of Information Science. It aims at describing the use of the collective and social memory theoretical conceptions in the realm of Information Science in Brazil from the the following specific objectives: analysing the concepts of memory, taking into account their adjectives; identifying the concepts of collective memory and social memory in the studies in Information Science in Brazil indexed in BRAPCI, characterising the use of collective memory and social memory concepts in Information Science in Brazil. It proposes, in its methodological path, a research based on theoretical and empirical data, being descriptive in relation to the objectives, bibliographical in relation to the procedures and uses content analysis for the data collection from the scientific production indexed at BRAPCI between the years 1972 and 2020. 86 documents were recovered by the “collective memory” descriptor and 120 documents through the descriptor “social memory”. It hopes, as results, getting to detect difference of understanding between the terms as well as its use in the scientific production of the area
