KEY WORDS:

SUMMARY:

Over the last few decades, Brazilian and international studies have been evaluating the performance of Research Groups and how researchers' social relations occur. From them, it is possible to observe changes and reconfigurations in the composition of the Groups to meet the demands of Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I), at the academic, social or innovative level. However, the scenario observed by several foreign empirical studies is that increasing the number of researchers unnecessarily (or unplanned) can negatively compromise endogenous variables (internal indicators, such as: bibliographic productions; training of human resources, and; research activities ) and exogenous variables (usual external parameters in the qualification of scientific production and of the researchers themselves). In this sense, this work has as general objective to measure the Scale Income of Brazilian Research Groups in the area of Agrarian Sciences and how their configurations of number of researchers unfold into research, production, training and citation indicators. To reach the core of this Thesis, the specific objectives are: a) to discuss the dynamics of social relations between researchers in Science; b) identify the most recurrent activities carried out by research groups; c) prepare an analysis instrument based on parameters for the main endogenous and exogenous activities carried out by the Groups; d) analyze the Scale Income obtained by the Brazilian Research Groups in the Agronomy sub-area. As for the methodological procedures, it is an explanatory research that adopted the deductive hypothetical approach method. It is characterized as a case study and to achieve the results a bibliographical research was undertaken. Data from researchers in the Groups were collected in the following databases: Directory of Research Groups; Lattes Platform; Scopus, and; Web of Science. For this purpose, the ScriptLattes software was used for data extraction and compilation, R correlation indicators, dispersion and temperature graphs were created. Among the main results obtained, it was verified that the smaller groups achieved better performances than groups with more researchers in several variables, such as: higher average number of completed projects; researchers with a productivity grant; Index H, e; average amount of citations. It was also noted that researchers from smaller Groups with productivity grants generate more articles and high H indices.Clear relationships were identified between the growth in the number of researchers in larger groups and a consequent reduction in the average production and citations. It is inferred from the literature review and based on the results obtained that all Larger Groups would have better returns to scale if they reduced their size by two or three times, generating subdivisions. Therefore, the analysis instrument and procedures adopted proved to be applicable for evaluating the Income of variables that involve Groups. For this reason, it is understood that it can be replicated to assess aspects related to other areas of knowledge. The conclusions of this study serve to help managers and leaders of Groups in planning more equitable actions regarding the proportion between members and academic activities. It is noteworthy that the results should not serve as a premise for unbridled productivism in response to the lower income results of larger groups, but rather a review of the productive capacity of the groups that leads to a balance in the distribution of activities in ST&I carried out by their researchers.
