SUMMARY:

Disinformation represents a significant part of one of the most complex issues in the circulation of information in contemporary society, and young people are one of the groups most exposed to this reality, considering the use of digital social media in their daily lives. Based on these introductory reflections, one question will be addressed throughout this research: How do students in the field of Information Science who enter university in Brazil deal with disinformation? Considering the above, the overall objective is to diagnose the critical competence of students to recognize disinformation on digital social networks and to navigate this informational environment. The specific objectives are to analyze whether university-bound students can detect disinformation and examine how these students react or behave when confronted with disinformation. In terms of purpose, this is descriptive research, and regarding the method, it is a diagnostic study. In its evaluative form, it is quantitative research. Data collection was carried out through the administration of a questionnaire to incoming students in Information Science undergraduate programs at federal universities in Brazil. The results indicate that the Information Age presents us with new educational challenges, revealing that the surveyed students face increasing volumes of data from various sources. Despite the students' intense connectivity to social networks, being part of a group that maintains profiles for more than three years and revisits their feeds repeatedly throughout the day, it is observed that this does not make them experts in filtering information available on social media. Indeed, the research identified a group of students with difficulties in discerning disinformation, emphasizing the importance of preparing academics for lifelong learning, enabling them to seek reliable information for any task or decision, and combat the spread of disinformation
