SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis presents considerations about the preservation of printed newspapers of historical value and the social phenomena that directly impact the function of preserving recorded memory. Its guiding problem and hypothesis are the direct observation of the “memorial emergency” diagnosed in Jornais Pernambucanos, which also resembles the reality of other Brazilian newspapers. It aims to “propose a referential model for the organization and preservation of newspaper documents through the theory of Memorial Systems, based on the Heritage Curation Program for the Historical Collection of the Diário de Pernambuco”, based on theoretical reflections and methodological and technical solutions that meet the need to Preserve the Memory of Printed Newspapers of historical value in Memory Institutions. It is characterized as a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, using the Quadripolar Method as a methodological procedure. It introduces the theme through prefacial analysis, in which the object and research corpus are presented through a systemic perspective of cooperative work between Memory Institutions (Memorial Network), thus highlighting the theoretical and practical aspects of preserving memorial heritage of printed newspapers of historical value (epistemological pole). It presents a Theoretical Framework constructed through observation and understanding of the relationships between the scientific object and concepts, principles, theories and lines of thought originating from both Information Science and related areas (theoretical pole). It uses Bibliographic/Documentary Research to find theoretical concepts necessary for the construction of this Theoretical Framework and Field Research to collect data, visualize, experiment and participate in the practical reality of the research (technical pole). It studies the characteristics of the “Program of Heritage Curation of the Historical Collection of the Diário de Pernambuco” as a project that is not restricted to an isolated action of restoration or digitization, but rather, due to its regional originality, complexity and robustness. It considers the Knowledge Technologies Laboratory (Liber/UFPE) as an environment of applied practices that brings together all the managerial, methodological, technical and technological aspects necessary for the Preservation of the Memorial Heritage. Conceives the Printed Newspaper Memory Preservation Model (PRESSMEN) as a scientific product of the thesis, consisting of the strategic (structural stage), technical and operational (emergency stage) levels, in which the theoretical, methodological and practical characteristics are highlighted, contributing to an adequate and complete preservation of newspapers in Memory Institutions (morphological pole). It concludes by reinforcing the need to preserve memory through centuries-old newspapers, which as “scraps of history” resurfacing from its “memorial ashes”, thus represent a hope to keep Brazilian memory alive
