SUMMARY:

Within the chemical industry, in several stages of the manufacturing processes, it is necessary to heat or cool a fluid, before or after some stage of the process, and it is in these stages that heat exchangers are used. In some applications, when the fluid used is corrosive, special care is required in the project to ensure a useful and profitable life for the equipment. When the fluid used, in addition to being corrosive, is lethal, even more care is needed in the design, to ensure, in addition to a profitable service life, that the probability of leakage/leakage is closer to zero, so that there are no accidents due to contact. with the lethal fluid. The heat exchangers, which work with corrosive fluids, have components made of titanium alloys, due to its main characteristic of excellent resistance to corrosion. Some of these titanium components are welded together using the TIG process, with two variants: conventional (manual) or autogenous (automatic). The purpose of this study was to analyze the metallurgical behavior of the two variants of the TIG process, through comparisons of microstructures and non-destructive tests.
