SUMMARY:

This research focuses on conceptualizing and studying the “articulating professional user” and his process of creative technological appropriation, which consists of the process in which the subjects of the activity make suggestions for uses of technology that go beyond what is expected by others, including the developers themselves. When considered as users, professionals who deals directly with the public can take advantage of design artifacts to create, implement and evaluate activities with the end users of the technology, thus acting as an “articulating professional user”. This scenario in which a specialist professional creatively appropriates and redefines the use of a tool constitutes a rich field of information to be considered in the development processes of products for the Design area. As a theoretical framework, the constructs of the Historical-Cultural Activity Theory (LEONTIEV, 1981), the Model of Technology Appropriation (CARROLL, 2004) and the Activity System Tool Appropriation Model (WAYCOTT, 2005) were used. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research studied the creative technological appropriation processes of three Occupational Therapy professionals when working with a new game called “Te contei?” (“Did I tell you?”), implemented with 17 patients in a total of 32 applications. As a result, it was possible to map the activity systems of the articulating professional as a major influencer in the fortification of the technologies in use, leveraging resources through the process of resignification and influencing the very process of appropriation of the other subjects in the activity (the end users of the technology). When present in the activity systems, it was possible to point out that this character creates opportunities for delaying the tool expropriation process since it maps and uses the same artifact in different ways, in addition to actively adapting activities so that they are more appropriate for users, avoiding frustrations and abandonment of technology. In addition to the conceptualization of the articulating professional, among the main considerations of the study, the re-reading of the technological appropriation models is highlighted, combining the knowledge acquired in the theoretical foundation and the proposition of adaptation of the Model of Technology Appropriation by including the creative appropriation of the articulating professional.
