SUMMARY:

Using a qualitative-experimental approach, this research aims to approach a post-structuralist discursive perspective in the field of design. In this sense, the Power Rangers series is used as an interface object between Michel Foucault's concept of discourse, Judith Butler's notion of performativity, and information design practices. To develop this interlocution, the concept of technochoreographed image is used, selecting passages from live-action series framed in this category. Specifically, a frame from the 21st season (Power Rangers Super Megaforce, 2014) is analyzed through a critical analysis of normatively structured information using a (re)elaborative practice of categories assigned to character design (color, position, body, pose, and costume). Then, an analysis of discursive productions of visual and/or verbal results is produced, based on Foucault's perception that historical-social-philosophical excursions are necessary in relation to the studied object in order to understand a certain statement considered moral, correct, and given, or, in other words, what is established as normal. The analysis suggests that Power Rangers still disseminates hegemonic discourses about gender relations, including binarities, 'phallic-military' leadership, femininity stereotypes, heterosexual compulsion, current bodily ideals, ableist notions, transphobia, and regulations about childhood. Finally, it is indicated that, despite the need for adjustments and new applications, the method of critical analysis of information through performative subversions ((re)elaborations) proved to be a reflexive act in itself. It is also pointed out that a discursive approach in information design is not only practicable but necessary since it can tension and denaturalize legitimized forms of knowledge-power in the field (theories, objects, methods, anomalies, exclusions, etc.), that is, it provides a point of escape from a linguistic and rationalist treatment of informational products.
