SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates the trajectory and graphic work of Heinrich Moser, a German artist who lived in Pernambuco at the beginning of the 20th century. H. Moser ́s contribution to the beginnings of Pernambuco design is evaluated, through the set of his graphic productions and professional activities from a broader perspective, considering his performance in the press, in periodicals, in the editorial set, in advertising, in the graphic industry in general and also as professor at the Pernambuco School of Fine Arts. The survey of H. Moser's life and of his work on what today is understood as graphic design was carried out in public and private collections, and also, through an intense investigation, in digitized newspapers of the time now available on line. For data analysis, this thesis took into account the historical and social context of the time and H. Moser's personal relationships. In addition, this thesis sought to evaluate some of his productions from the perspective of information design, based on the theories of Twyman (1979, 1982) and Ashwin (1979), thus making it possible to reflect on the graphic language and visual solutions adopted by the artist. The possible influence of the aesthetic movements of that historical period on his work was also taken into account. It was observed that the graphic solutions and different styles in their productions were related to the specific objective of each work and the theme requested by the client according to the target audience, thus evidencing practices of a design professional. As a professor, he had a significant influence on the construction of the curriculum at the Pernambuco School of Fine Arts (EBA). In the programs proposed by H. Moser, didactic exercises related to the graphic production of the time were found, evidencing the connection of this discipline with graphic design. This research identified that the various graphic productions of H. Moser, as well as his teaching at EBA, represent a significant contribution to the history of design and to the graphic memory of Pernambuco. In this way, it is possible to confirm and recognize H. Moser as one of the pioneers of Brazilian design.
