SUMMARY:

Academic teaching for the creation of visual identity systems (VISs) is offered on design courses at Brazilian public institutions of higher education, in disciplines related to graphic design. For this specific form of teaching, a preliminary review of the existing literature indicated that essentially project-based methods are used, which contain a systematic organization that provides guidance on how to work with projects but offers no didactic support. Thus, faced with the presupposed problem of there being no teaching methods that are able to provide support to teachers in guiding the development of VIS, this doctoral research began with the aim of reformulating a pre-existing experimental design model known as Fuxico (hand-made flowers from remnants of fabric), into a teaching method herein termed Roda de Fuxico (fuxico-making groups). In addition to project-based phases, the method also provides suggestions for teaching plans, lesson planning, reading materials, exercises and tools to assist in the evaluation of work, as well as suggestions for workshops and practical exercises. Throughout the investigation, the assumption regarding the inexistence of a specific Brazilian teaching method was confirmed, through sample results arising from a systematic literature review on methods developed by other researchers, in addition to interviews with design professors from public universities across the five Brazilian regions. The methodology for developing the Roda de Fuxico teaching method was structured into five stages: (1) Theory, obtaining a broader, defined position regarding the knowledge that involves the field; (2) Immersion, running an apprenticeship with the knowledge and practices of the handicraft creative community of fuxico and re-signifying the value of autochthonous references, to the detriment of foreign paradigms, for Brazilian design methodologies; (3) Conception, with the construction of the teaching method, influenced by the visited theory and by the coexistence in the rodas de fuxico; (4) Experimentation, when the method was experimented by teachers from the Federal Institute of Paraíba (IFPB); and (5) Presentation, when the Roda de Fuxico method was presented to eight specialist teachers in visual identity systems, from all regions of Brazil, seeking suggestions for improvement and validation. With an interruption in the doctorate studies due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a significant part of the study needed to be conducted remotely, thereby directly influencing data collection. Nevertheless, the immersion in the rodas de fuxico still took place, enabling a correspondence to be created between a process arising from local knowledge, the rodas de fuxico, and the teaching method in design. From this, it was perceived that a step had been taken toward the process of decolonizing design teaching, albeit a small move forward, given the awareness that decolonization in teaching is a deeper and more complex process. Moreover, in addition to being configured as a teaching method, the Roda de Fuxico presents techniques and tools that insert different participants into the creation processes, including those with divergent positions, based on the participatory design approach and the inclusive vision of the rodas de fuxico. These participants are named fuxiqueiros, namely: clients, designers undergoing formation and the various types of subjects for whom and with whom visual identities are developed. It is understood that there are different types of subjects who interact with visual identities, and not only those who use them. This proposal to expand the diversity of participants distances Roda de Fuxico from other design methods that suggest, as a priority, direct interaction between the project client and the responsible designer. Finally, the Roda de Fuxico method has become available, validated by teachers and specialists, for interested teachers, perceiving it as one that offers teaching support suggestions, which may be used either in full or in a modular form, and which presents characteristics of flexibility when adapting to the teachers' pre-existing teaching process and to their particular teaching-learning characteristics.
