SUMMARY:

Smartphones have rapidly become popular, reaching a significant part of the world population. The gesture, captured through the touchscreen technology, is characterized as the main form of interaction with this device, facilitating people's lives in different daily tasks, and, however, also negatively affecting the health of its adepts in different aspects, whether physical or psychological. Based on this finding, this research sought to apply practical and feasible procedures to identify ergonomic non-conformities that compromise the physical comfort and the musculoskeletal structures involved in this interaction. Thus, this research aims to develop a method to evaluate the physical ergonomics of the gestural interface of smartphones, through the planning of procedures and selection of techniques and tools that help to identify problems that these gestural interfaces can cause in the body of their users, and then propose appropriate solutions to reduce discomfort and biomechanical overloads. Thus, three studies were developed: (1) survey with Brazilian smartphone users to identify demographic characteristics, usage habits and the relationship with the perception of discomfort; (2) first experimentation, with 10 volunteers, to evaluate the original interface of the Instagram feed with three distinct ways of interaction (interfaces A, B and C); (3) second experimentation, with 12 volunteers, to compare the predominant way of using the original interface (interface A) and the interface redesign (interface X), with the application of ergonomic recommendations to reduce extreme movements (reachability) and the amount of repetitive movements (repetitiveness). The last two studies were experimental, carried out with real users, to validate the proposed method, collecting objective physiological data (joint angles, skin temperature and hand anthropometry) and subjective perceptive data (discomfort, effort and stress). The results of Study 1 indicate that there is an influence of gender, preexistence of musculoskeletal problems, and time of daily use on the perception of discomfort. Furthermore, Studies 2 and 3 confirm the hypothesis that improper positioning of interactive elements and repetitive gestural actions directly affect the perception of discomfort in the hands during use, and that these variables can be manipulated through the ergonomic design of the digital interface.
