SUMMARY:

This dissertation has as its theme the use of variable font technology in flexible visual identities, in the contemporary context. Currently, this technology has been playing a prominent role not only in the typographic field, with the increase in possibilities for digital fonts, but also contributing to providing brands with more dynamic characteristics. With a change in the landscape of brand design, with brands increasingly migrating from print to digital media, brands have been gaining new connotations, being able to experiment with more flexible behaviors and applications, especially in relation to current technological devices. Thus, aiming to understand more deeply the role that typography, combined with variable font technology, has in the conception of flexible visual identities in the digital context, the research was divided into two stages. In the first, extensive research was carried out both in the typographic universe and in that of brands. A bibliographic review was carried out on these two universes in order to contextualize them, presenting concepts, terminologies and historical evolution. The origins of flexible brands as well as the historical progress of typographic technologies supported the research for the data collection and analysis stage. An analysis sheet for flexible visual identities that use variable fonts will be used to obtain data, as well as a questionnaire to be submitted to professionals who are directly involved with the universe of variable fonts, whether in the context of flexible visual identity projects or creators of digital fonts with said technology. These data from the analysis and questionnaires, added to the theoretical research, aim to weave an overview of flexible visual identities composed of variable fonts.
