SUMMARY:

The Italian-Brazilian architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) is recognized as one of the most important professionals in her fields of activity in Brazil, where she would naturalize in 1951 and live until the end of her days. Upon her arrival in the country in 1946, Lina began the process of what would be a deep dive into Brazilian cultural and popular roots, which, at the end of her life, she believed would be the source for building a true autochthonous identity. For Lina, the artifacts produced by Brazilians who solved problems in a barbaric everyday life – a term she used to refer to the conditions of those who suffered from a lack of resources
and the neglect of public authorities, led to what she called an impasse of the design: the country should move from what she saw as a pre-craftsmanship to a design with national characteristics. Simplicity, in her work, emerged as a written discourse, still in the Italian phase, and then passed into design discourse, over the years, when it was conceptually transformed, a process reinforced by personal and professional experiences, which led her to (re) know the simplicity of popular artifacts. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyze the expressions and transformations of the notion of simplicity, between the years 1946 and 1992, in Lina Bo Bardi's written production, design and cultural actions in Brazil. The research, of a qualitative nature and which conforms to a single case study, is based on the evidence and data obtained in the investigation carried out in the dissertation Lina Bo Bardi, architetto e designer: um estudo de caso sobre a fase italiana (1939-1946), prepared by the same author of the thesis, was based on theorists of Philosophy to define what Simplicity is, in the literature that deals with the history of Brazilian Architecture and Design, a period contemporary to Lina's Brazilian phase and in the primary sources constituted by texts written by architect herself, in Portuguese and Italian. The studies made it possible to observe Lina's intellectual maturity, a notion that was perceived from the transformations in the expressions of simplicity, so that it went from notably tangible expressions to mostly intangible ones, over the years, as Lina felt more and more linked to your country of choice.
