SUMMARY:

Emerging in the post-industrial scenario is self-production, a productive system in
which the designer - developing authorial work and according to his own strategy - is
responsible for managing the design process in its entirety: the conception,
production, distribution and communication of your products. The phenomenon is
little studied from the perspective of Brazilian authorial design, with the vast majority
being the result of European research. We sought to understand this activity in the
production of contemporary Brazilian furniture using the single case study, which
recorded the strategies and adaptations of a young design studio to remain active,
despite the socioeconomic impacts generated by a pandemic and other
administrative factors. federal. Through analysis of documents, artifacts, digital
presence and interviews with the responsible designers, it was possible to
understand the motivations to undertake through authorial design, as well as the
symbolic relationship of the repertoire of northeastern designers who highlight playful
childhood memories and use references regional in the formal configuration of his
pieces. However, factors such as prolonged social isolation, inflation that affected the
cost of inputs, as well as the high price of transporting cargo to other regions of a
country of continental proportions, were decisive for the temporary closure of selfproduction
activities since 2020. Until the local production conditions improved, they
opted for the licensing system for their authorial products, relying on the structure of
larger companies for the production, distribution and part of the communication
processes. The experience of this production model is being modified every day to
ensure greater control over the expected quality in the design process, and has
proved to be an important alternative for the survival of micro enterprises. Estudio
Galho managed to maintain, given the production conditions possible at the time, the
language it began to build in its initial self-production process: the reference of local
culture.
