SUMMARY:

The dissertation deals with the manual production of jewelry in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte, Cariri region of Ceará, a city that has a local tradition of goldsmithing and other crafts. This research object was observed in a panoramic way, seeking to identify the main characteristics of the production of jewelers today, having as main approach to understand this activity as an artistic practice, through the anthropological theory of art proposed by Alfred Gell, who analyzes the art object as “social agent”, which, according to the author, is also a component of technology and everyday life. Through field research, direct contact with the goldsmiths and also with the support of the available bibliography on the subject, the analysis was structured from the identification of three different groups of jewelers who work in the city: the group of goldsmiths who work with and productions in the traditional workshops of the region; another group linked to the undergraduate degree in Design at the Federal University of Cariri; and a third focused on more contemporary jewelry practices. Finally, aspects that connect these expressions of the jewelery of Juazeiro do Norte in the present day were pointed out and characterizes it as an artistic work, given the different profiles of identified creators, based on the theories studied. The challenges of the research, which was carried out in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, were also presented, and some suggestions for future approaches for the group were indicated.
