SUMMARY:

Historically, the publication of books with illustrated covers in Brazil stands out for its pioneering spirit and originality. In addition to establishing itself as a legitimate expression of society and its cultural and aesthetic movements, the book cover presents itself as the rst communication between the literary work and the reader, constituting an important tool in the marketing strategy. Whatever the book, its cover is the result of a collective action in which many interested parties are involved, such as the designer, an important agent in the publishing process who responds with his graphic project to the demands of the author, the editor and the reader. Taking the cover in its condition of cultural artifact and commercial artice, the general objective of the study was to understand how the covers of books published by the publishers Companhia das Letras and Paralela are congured as an interface between design, the market and culture. With a qualitative tendency, the multi-case study focused on the visual articulation between syntax and semantics that operate, respectively, on aesthetics and the production of meanings contained in the covers. Furthermore, in accordance with the marketing fundamentals adopted for the publishing market, both the experience of the professionals involved in the publication process and the relationship of readers with the covers were investigated. For such purposes, visual analysis, content analysis and survey methods were used. From a combination of the reections raised by the theory and the research ndings, it is concluded that the book cover is congured as an interface that brings together design principles, market demands and cultural inuences. In the existing links between the three spheres, there are mutual interferences that aect the functions of the cover, giving it the condition of a visual artifact that, in addition to contributing to the circulation of knowledge and art, perpetuates meanings when it visually crystallizes the cultural face of its time.
