SUMMARY:

This research investigates what generates interdependency between text and image in children’s illustrated books. We investigated which strategies exist to avoid redundancy between text and image, and which methods exist in order to characterize relationships between text and image. We then analyzed those relationships in selected children’s books. To do so, we undertook a brief historic panorama of children’s books and the illustrations therein presented. We investigated the specificities of text in this support and registered the recommendations on what to write and what not to write. We also investigated characteristics of the image in children’s books and registered the recommendations found regarding what to illustrate. We approached the categorization of layout, functions of text, text-image relationship, and how both text and image interact with each other under these relationships according to Linden (2011). Our methodological procedures were mainly composed of reading six books from Companhia Editora de Pernambuco (Publishing Company of Pernambuco – Cepe) according to the inferential reading strategy of Tavares (2019) within the characteristics categorized by Linden (Op. cit). These procedures were followed by a discussion through quali-quantitative analysis, aided by comparative tables and by explanatory procedure. Lastly, we compiled the information found during this research so that this synthesis may be useful to those involved in book publishing, as well as for other researchers interested in this subject.
