SUMMARY:

The process of modernization of the Brazilian press that occurred in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century did not homogeneously affect all periodicals in the country. In the case of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, there is still little data on the technical progress of its printing workshops. Based on this absence, this research proposed to investigate the modernization project of the Official Press of RN and its newspaper, A República, during the late 1920s. In the period between 1928 and 1931, initiated during the administration of Governor Juvenal Lamartine, there was a remodeling of government bodies in RN, among which the Official Press benefited. The research seeks to contextualize this process with those in other regions of the country, collecting data not only from newspapers with large circulation, but also with information about the Official Presses of other States. During this period, according to the official documentation of the time, A República purchased new typographic equipment, including new movable types, linotype and a rotoplate, as well as the construction of a new headquarters for the newspaper's workshop and editorial office. In this sense, in addition to documentary analysis, the research aims to understand how much this intentionality of change affected the materiality of the newspaper A República, proposing the typographic identification of the types used in the newspaper's titles and the analysis of the graphic structure of its covers.
