SUMMARY:

With the increasing life expectancy, the global population is experiencing a trend towards aging, resulting in a growing number of elderly people. When looking back at this audience, one can see the urgency in preparing their home environments for a quality stay, suited to their specific needs. Their residence is the built environment where the elderly spend most of their time, and has the capacity to significantly influence their autonomy and perception of well-being and quality of life. By law, elderly individuals are entitled to live in dignified conditions, whether within their family or or in a nursing home environment. When residing in Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly (LTCFs), these institutions must provide environments that ensure health, hygiene, and accessibility. That said, the general aim of this research was to establish whether the physical infrastructure recommendations of Collegiate Board Resolution No. 502/2021, by National Health Surveillance Agency, a legal document that indicates the minimum operating conditions for LTCFs, adequately meet the intrinsic needs of the relationship between the elderly and LTCFs. To achieve this, diagnostic assessments were conducted on technical and ergonomic aspects of LTCFs in Recife and three other cities in Pernambuco, relying on data collected by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Pernambuco and the Municipal Health Surveillance Agency, as well as studies published by Ergoambiente, from the Federal University of Pernambuco. The results revealed similarities between the two perspectives, such as issues of accessibility and the adaptation of the built environment to the specific demands of residents, focusing on reducing accident risks and personalizing the space. The academic perspective provided essential characterizations regarding environmental comfort and the established needs program. Finally, the findings contributed to the definition of ergonomic environmental standards in LTCFs, which, beyond practical implications, could support improvements in the studied legal instrument and future similar architectural projects.
