SUMMARY:

The cinema plays a significant role as a powerful means of transmitting information. In this context, this thesis aimed to analyze the representation of transgender women in cinema, portrayed in fictional film characters over the last three decades (1990-1999; 2000-2009; 2010-2019), through images of artifacts clothing. The problem of the current research is inserted in a context about the representation of female trangenderity in cinema and is concerned with identifying how it has been portrayed. The methodology used was guided by knowledge in the areas of semiotics, information design and fashion design, based on the elements of visual language, fashion design and plastic signs. Renowned, well-evaluated films aimed at the general public were used to compose the analytical corpus, made up of three films from each decade. In this way, the nine films selected were: The Crying Game (1992), The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), All About My Mother (1999), Carandiru (2003), Soldier's Girl (2003), Transamerica (2005), Tangerine (2015), A Fantastic Woman (2017) and Girl (2018). The analysis corpus consisted of 120 looks, captured using the Print Screen function. To carry out a detailed analysis of the clothing artifacts of the transgender women characters, a form was developed, which is one of the results obtained. The general results were divided into two divisions: 1| from the perspective of narratives, archetypes and stereotypes; 2| from the point of view of clothing artifacts. This investigation found that narratives and stereotypes contribute to a marginalized and stigmatized construction, resulting in recreational transphobia of the trans feminine identity. Meanwhile, the clothing artifacts of trans/transvestite characters were associated with concepts of elegance and femininity, for the most part, with colors and textures considered unisex, and shapes with a high level of femininity.
