SUMMARY:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the epistemological interaction between design and mimesis, in order to clarify the central function of mimesis as a creative procedure. The main focus is on the aesthetic and symbolic elements, aiming to empirically understand the methods and approaches associated with this process. In order to achieve this purpose, it is essential to provide a precise contextualization of the concept of mimesis, outlining its scope and the possible associated methodological approaches in the field of design. In this perspective, philosophical issues related to the concept of mimesis (ARISTOTLE, 2009) are explored, as well as historical (FORTY, 2007) and methodological aspects associated with mimesis in the field of design, especially highlighting the Taiwanese article entitled "A Blended Method for Generating Creative Product Concepts" (WANG, 2015) as a valuable example of the empirical application of mimesis in this context. In this sense, this process involves an investigation of the specific characteristics of the mimetic design artifact, emphasizing its semantic duality as a distinctive attribute, since the mimetic process unfolds from two fundamental entities: the "source", representing the object of inspiration, and the "target", which configures the artifact created under the influence of this inspiration. In addition, we performed a categorization based on the source of inspiration, resulting in the identification of two broad groups: natural mimesis and artificial mimesis. Additionally, we examine mimicry (NASCIMENTO, 2009) as mimesis inherent to nature and artificial intelligence (BOECHAT, 2019) as the mimetic process engendered by machines, seeking to assimilate and extract even more insight into the mimetic process. In addition to the preliminary context, a concise analysis of perception and cognition (LOBACH, 2001) becomes crucial to understand, from the user's point of view, the subject that receives the mimetic argument, the complexity of mimetic aesthetic perception and its relationship with the attribute of territoriality (KRUCKEN, 2000). In this sense, we investigated the perception of mimesis as a strategy of identity and belonging, considering the identity of Pernambuco furniture as an object of study. In the methodological context, we analyzed design methodologies, with an emphasis on mimesis methodologies, covering the segments of artificial mimesis and natural mimesis (ARRUDA, 2020). Thus, the research adopts the experimental method (SANTOS, 2018) to validate hypotheses in hypothetical-deductive research, culminating in the workshop "Mimeses Design". In it, 16 participants developed concepts for mimetic artifacts through two methods: the intuitive, allowing freedom of ideas spontaneously; and the artificial intelligence-based method, using tools such as Midjourney and Adobe Firefly to create the artifacts. Thus, it became feasible to analyze the procedures used in both methods, seeking to establish a methodological synthesis based on this understanding. After the formulation of the proposed method, entitled "Mimesis Design", artifacts were created and their mimetic properties were evaluated through online questionnaires, allowing the investigation of the intrinsic characteristics of mimesis and the value of territoriality associated with its attributes. This analysis sought to confirm or refute the initial hypotheses about preference, recognition, identity and belonging.
