SUMMARY:

This research addresses Wearable Art in Brazil in the 20th century, according to international and national definitions, with the obective of historical acknowledgement and, at the same time, revealing this segment contemplating Brazilian miscegenation. Wearable art began almost as a retroactive process to the industry, with productions of more artisanal and individual characteristics, which indicated more authentic ways of representation, where the relationship between individual and society was antagonistic to industrialization. In observing these phenomena, new ideas and arguments were included, such as Alfred Gell's (1945-1997) theories on "art and agency" and Nicolas Bourriaud's (b.1965) theories on "relational aesthetics". We separate three observation groups, which are correlated, they are: wearable art agency; relational wearable art; and wearable art effects. In these, twenty possibilities of wearable art are addressed, by artists, artisans, makers and communities. Among them, not all are considered art, as studies on wearable art are still scarce, this research proposes to discuss and bring up new issues, as well as an update on the past, from a contemporary perspective, thus adding wearable objects as art. Questions about whether or not they are objects of art are evidenced by the fact that the examples arise from people who normally act against oppose the oppressors, known as marginalized or excluded, with characteristics of being challenging, creative and for thinking outside the box. Faced with Gell's ideas about art objects having life, we observe the life of wearable art objects, point out ways for new research and welcome the most diverse means to expand the definition and segmentation of wearable art in Brazil.
