SUMMARY:

The implementation of new façade construction techniques in architecture has been an
idealisation of the last decades, but finally possible thanks to the knowledge from the
observation of new concepts and project paradigms. Biotechnology studies (technology based
on biological sciences at the cellular level with specific application) produce diverse solutions
in models inspired from plant cells to improve the subsystem constituted by the interface
between the internal and external environment of a building, favouring adaptations of thermal
gains and losses as well as solar control. In this sense, the adequate supply focused on the
ecosystem is responsible for filtering stable comfort conditions to the external world of
buildings, allowing the creation of sustainable envelopes and a multitude of artistic resources.
Thus, the present research addresses the relationship between the insertion of strategy and
technique, regarding the use of surface design models for the process of artistic composition in
glass on the facades. For this, natural resources will be taken into account; concepts and
typologies of glazed buildings and elements of surface design. Since it is about technical
procedures of approach and data collection, the research offers a qualitative methodological
process, descriptive and of a systematic theoretical nature in recent literature. As a method,
focus groups with experts and professionals in the field will be used to report on technical and
conceptual definitions and principles in architecture and design. The research will also trace the
evolution of components related to image implementation techniques and the properties of
computational algorithm in glass. The relationship of the integration of design with digital
technologies and printing aims to inspire architects and designers in future developments based
on environmental stimuli and to contribute with strategies to advance the investigation of new
smart artistic materials.
