SUMMARY:

The thesis, of a qualitative nature, aims to understand how the artifacts contribute to the process of re-signification of the body and reconstruction of the identity of women undergoing mastectomy due to breast cancer, against the backdrop of social representations about women, the breast and of the female body. We emphasize that breast cancer corresponds to almost 30% of cases of cancer diagnosed annually, with 99% of occurrence in females. It is the second most common type among women, being the one that kills the most, despite being curable in more than 90% of cases, when discovered early. Because it is a disease with a high incidence and a high lethality rate, we highlight the social nature of the topic addressed. The image of the female breast is strongly imbued with an emotional and symbolic charge that translates aspects such as motherhood, fertility, femininity and sexuality. The absence of such a representative part of the body, in addition to physical effects, can have psychological implications that directly influence people's lives with regard to their self-esteem and interaction with other individuals. When getting rid of the disease goes beyond the limits of drug treatments, requiring more aggressive medical procedures such as breast removal, the negative repercussions tend to be even greater. In addition to being physically painful, the mastectomy procedure is capable of awakening, in patients, insecurity about relationships, body shame and a feeling of non-recognition of self-image, making self-acceptance difficult and even leading to processes of depression. Beauty standards, on the other hand, which are generally stricter for the female public, further burden the emotional burden to which mastectomized women are exposed. In this scenario, we presume that, in an attempt to restore the shaken identity after the mastectomy, some women start the search to reframe their self-image. We assume that the artifacts, in their different configurations, can serve as a tool in this process of reframing the women's body image. Therefore, we intend to identify in the speeches and other subjective content, the role of artifacts and the influence of social representations about women, the breast and the female body in the different stages of coping with breast cancer. In the field study, we intend to use participatory tools such as participant observations, interviews and workshops. We hope, through the proposed experiments, to assimilate the main demands and desires of the studied group, identifying how the artifacts support them in the different stages of treatment. Understanding design as a social process that needs to correspond to the experiences, repertoire and perceptions of individuals, we believe that our reflections can serve as a contribution to future research, once strategies are identified for configuring artifacts with the potential to promote the empowerment of women in the field. concerning your body and your self-esteem.
