BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Desenho Industrial
SUMMARY:

It is not new that illegal logging in the Amazon is calling the attention of environmentalists in Brazil and around the world. Brazilian furniture has wood as the main element for the materialization of its language, comprising both functional and technical as well as symbolic aspects. In this sense, it is possible to state that the choice of wood as the main raw material is due to the wide diversity of species found in the national territory. However, given the high rates of deforestation observed in Brazil, an alternative to reduce the damage caused would be the use of reforested, engineered or reclaimed/recovered wood. In line with this perspective, Marcenaria Olinda, founded in 2015 under the motto of “not one tree less”, has in its design creation process the exclusive use of recovered wood, valuing sustainable and regenerative practices. Given this scenario, it is important to join efforts to ensure the conservation of natural resources for future generations. This research aims to discuss the context of the use of wood as a raw material, in addition to encouraging the use of reclaimed wood, which reflects on the preservation of the environment and addresses aesthetic and political questions about this use. The research is divided into two parts, the first being a literature review which addresses the following topics: 1. Brazilian furniture; 2. design and sustainability; 3. art and politics. In the second part, a single case study, in which the object of investigation is the Marcenaria Olinda, is carried out. For this, a semi-structured questionnaire was carried out with the objective of gathering important information about the brand and expanding the discussion on the use of recovered woods in the Brazilian authorial furniture design.
