SUMMARY:

The elderly population is growing and, with that, there is a concern with the necessary conditions to assist individuals in this age group. Many elderly people live in Long Stay Institutions (ILPIs) which, with the rapid expansion of the urban perimeter, are increasingly being incorporated by urban centers. Built environments play an important role in the user's quality of life, as well as enabling greater social and emotional interaction for the individual. Thus, with the recognition of the needs of the elderly, it is necessary to establish design guidelines that promote better living conditions in society and offer adequate environments to help promote social interaction. The initial hypothesis arises from the precept that issues of privacy, security and identity favor this social interaction of the elderly. These questions were associated with environmental aspects to assess the influence of the built environment on the social interaction of institutionalized elderly. For this, two ILPIs were used as objects of study. One of the institutions is located in the center of Parque 18 de Maio, where the Caruaru fair is located and the other, isolated from the urban perimeter of the city of Bezerros in the Encruzilhada de São João neighborhood. The study adopted the Theory of Facets (TF) to structure the empirical investigation of the research. As an instrument for data collection, the Multiple Classification System (SCM) was used, using photographs of the internal and external environments of ILPIs with different environmental variables, and semi-structured interviews with the elderly to collect the effects of environmental factors for the promotion of social interaction. In all, 38 institutionalized elderly were interviewed. The data obtained from the SCM were analyzed by the multidimensional scaling technique called Analysis of the Structure of Similarity (Smilarity Structure Analysis - SSA). It was observed that the environmental attributes that most influence the stimulus that promotes social interaction in institutionalized elderly people are those of identity and privacy. Based on this, we sought to develop design recommendations for environments that favor social interaction in long-stay institutions. Thus, when better living conditions are provided to the environment, making it more attractive to users, permanence is stimulated in the individual and positively impacts social interaction between users.
