SUMMARY:

The relationship of the university with society is an old theme of reflections and debates. Beyond the production of knowledge and the training of professionals with capacity to act in the labor market, this institution has been provoked to think society in a concrete way, providing the development of a theoretical and critical thinking of ideas and the elaboration of proposals and alternatives to solve problems. University extension, as a bridge between university and community, has gained space in the discussions about the social role of universities, which, in turn, being a constitutive part of this society, also reproduce and live its contradictions. In this way, there is some questioning about the role of extension activities in the face of criticism of the science and technology agendas of universities. It is necessary to rethink the ways of producing knowledge that can lead to social transformations. However, in the face of complexity, interdisciplinary dialogue and new university agendas that consider the social and cultural contexts to meet the urgent demands of the population are indispensable. The dialogue with the community presents itself as a key point both in university extension and in the elaboration of these agendas that aim at the regional social demands. The importance of communication between the different knowledges, interdisciplinarity, and the search for solutions to problems that afflict the majority of the population go through the elaborations on extension and solidary technoscience. Design, on its turn, besides a critical stance should seek to intervene in society in order to transform it, there are in this area, despite different names and concepts, conceptions oriented towards society, specifically towards the resolution of social problems. This set of theories and practices in design, which can be found as Social Design, Human-Centered Design, Participatory Design and Co-Design, encompasses propositions that manifest the social responsibility of design. Thus, the research turns to the following question: how has the relationship between university and society been established through the extensionist practices of design courses in Brazilian federal universities? The hypothesis suggests that the extension activities developed in the design courses of the Brazilian federal universities, for the most part, are not guided by the National Plan for University Extension and do not dialogue with the concept of solidary technoscience. The study, which has as its object of study the university extension and as unit of analysis the extension activities developed in design courses in public Brazilian universities, aims to characterize the university extension of undergraduate courses in design, specifically in Brazilian federal universities, from the premises of the National Plan for University Extension, aiming to verify whether these experiences dialogue with the concept of solidary technoscience. The research, classified as applied, of exploratory nature and intended to be panoramic, is outlined with a dialectical approach and will be developed from mixed methods, thus consisting of two stages: quantitative and qualitative. The articulation between the study of extension activities, developed in undergraduate design courses at public federal universities, and the debates about solidary technoscience brings the possibility of visualizing the extensionist panorama of these courses, enabling a better compression of the relationship of this academic field with society and, thus, help possible changes and improvements in this bond. It is believed that the present research can contribute to the construction of possible ways of approach between the university and society, thus allowing such an indispensable and urgent exchange between popular and scientific knowledge.
