SUMMARY:

The research presented had the general objective of evaluating the perception of residents about the use of color on the facades of popular houses, emphasizing the importance for the area of design and ergonomics of the built environment, by identifying color arrangements that can improve the perceived visual quality. . The field research had as object of study the color on the facades of popular houses in the Alto Nossa Senhora de Fátima community, in the Vasco da Gama neighborhood, in Recife, Pernambuco. This location was part of the Mais Vida nos Morros Program, whose Residents' Association authorized the research to be carried out in the location, in addition to the community leader being willing to accompany the present researcher in approaches to the residents, thus avoiding displacements to various communities without the knowledge and facilities necessary for the interviews. For this purpose, the methodology used included documentary research and bibliographical research, in addition to Field Research. The results obtained, namely: green, representing hope and white, easy maintenance and low cost in the use of lime, are the predominant colors in the two researched groups; the meanings transmitted by the colors, according to the interviewees, have a wide repertoire, but are common within the same community; the impossibility of relating sociodemographic variables with the color preference determined; and, consequently, that the hearing of the residents of the popular houses shows that there is a predisposition of the interviewees, regardless of having acquired the paints for painting the facades at their own expense or not, in daring with the colors when choosing the most varied hues, that bring meanings from the experience of each one, from the stored memories, which make each research participant perceive the environment in their own way. Finally, it is expected that this work can guide decisions for programs about color on the facades of popular houses, as well as for the design of this type of housing, as it takes into account the opinion of residents, thus being able to favor the chromatic quality perceived in these urban spaces.
