SUMMARY:

The touchy interaction between fictional narrative and historiographical narrative still constitutes a recurring theme in the round table among theorists. By establishing themselves as writings that investigate man in each social context, many scholars, literary critics, historians, and philosophers could not resist the provocation of examining them, making, therefore, a kind of comparison in order to identify and distinguish their peculiarities. Effectively, according to the investigations of Luiz Costa Lima (2006), although the historical and literary discourses present certain affinities, for example, overcoming the intolerable son of time, oblivion (lethe), the two narratives are irreconcilable in terms of pretension: the history is concerned with the objective reporting of facts; literature with the aesthetic elaboration of these facts in accented words. Therefore, in terms of results, it could be said that history gathers facts, with the purpose of verifying them, from the meticulous examination of documents, while literature reconfigures the representation of the world, through the reformulation of reality (LIMA, 2006, p. 291). However, the boundaries between the territories of fiction and fact become hazy by the initiative of the historical novel. According to the theoretical perspectives of Marina Acero (2006), during Romanticism, historiography and novel were involved in a kind of conflicting contact, since they turned to the analysis of human behavior and social customs – nevertheless, the novel seemed to act as a more effective textual resource as knowing about human condition in different moments of past and present. It’s precisely in this suggestive connection between fictional writing and the historical report, between linguistically constructed reality and daily live reality, that the historical novel, entitled Confesiones de la monja alférez: la verdadera historia de Catalina de Erauso (2005) by the Chilean writer, Juanita Gallardo, is found, since, in its preface, there is a warning about a constant game between reality and fiction. Regarding the mentioned historical novel, there is a manifest intertextuality with the autobiographical text, entitled Historia de la Monja Alférez, Catalina de Erauso, escrita por ella misma (2018), which is inserted in the narrative through quotations in strategic positions, contributing with the verisimilitude of the novel that intends to be the true version of the Catalina de Erauso’s life. As a consequence, realizing the multiple perspective related to autobiographical narrative, as it presents an indetermination not only in terms of history and literature, but also manifests oscillations in terms of travel chronicles, picaresque novels and service memorials; it’s appropriate to observe how the narrative disposition of a life introduces possibilities and a respective reordering of that life, in the sense of collaborating with the idea of enactment as a factor of plasticity of human beings (ISER, 2013). Finally, contemplating the interaction between reality and fiction in the existential plot of a novice-soldier, belonging to the seventeenth century, the objective is to identify the interlacement (history-fiction) available, not only in the autobiographical account, but also in the novelized version of this, by the purpose of investigating if life can be configured in fabulous matter. The theories of Pozuelo (1993), Philippe Lejeune (2014), Bakhtin (2018), Calligaris (1998), Maravall (2009), Silva (1999) and Hatzfeld (1988) have been used to support discussions about Baroque culture, autobiographical genre characteristics, and historical novel structure. In addition, the present work also discusses the trajectory of historical women who, like Catalina de Erauso, were skilled with the pen and weapons in different historical contexts.
