DIFFERENCE OF MEANING OF FALSE FRIENDS: A HISTORICAL-CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS IN PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH LANGUAGES
False cognates. Portuguese. Spanish. Diachrony
This paper observed, through the historical-contrastive perspective, the semantic motivations behind the meaning mismatch of Portuguese/Spanish false cognates. To do so, it based its reflections on scientific theories that justify the importance of the analysis of this event from a diachronic perspective, considering that the studies that exist to date have only been developed under the synchronic aegis. The entries chosen for the analysis of the Portuguese language were taken from MACHADO, José Pedro. Dicionário etimológico da língua portuguesa. Lisbon: Livros Horizonte. 1995; the Spanish, from COROMINAS, Joan & PASCUAL, José A, Dicionário crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico. Madrid: Gredos. 1980. Thus, through this investigative line, he proposes a method that can serve both teachers and students who want to unravel the imbroglio of why homonyms and paronyms from the same linguistic trunk manifest particular meanings in a given period of time.
