SUMMARY:

This paper aims to answer the following question: How do the publications of Folha de S. Paulo represent, in evaluative terms, to be a woman between the 20th and 21st centuries? To do so, we focus on the texts published by the journalistic media, considering the meanings (re)constructed through lexical-grammatical and semantic-discursive elements, when the appearance of discursive marks that point to be a woman, between borders or accesses established to collective consciousnesses in the use of language. We rely on the Appraisal System (AS) or Appraisal for Martin and White (2005) which is grounded in the broader domain of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL), theoretical assumption of Halliday (2004). The analysis of lexical-grammatical choices with reverberation in the semantics of discourse considered, in the fifteen (15) texts analyzed, two major regions or interactional domains "Attitude" and "Graduation", from the spheres "Politics" and "Economy", using the publications of March 08, International Women's Day. The research assumes a qualitative bias, not only because of the choice of the analysis material itself, but also because it contemplates possible meanings that emerge through the analyst's eyes. From the two selected macro-themes, the character of "Appreciation" was identified as the most relevant, followed by "Judgment", and only then by "Affect". The three categorizations are complemented and are sometimes supported by one hundred elements of "Gradation", with "Force" as the highlight. The appreciative and affective terms gained a more positive or affirmative view among the occurrences, contrasting with the balance of judgment that evidenced a more negative viewpoint. The study undertaken, from this tracing, showed that, in a scenario of half a century, to be a woman, despite there being some recognition of her importance and value, is to deal, still, with challenges in realities full of obstacles and inequalities; to be a woman is also to seek to cross domination, restrictions and, sometimes, the place of stagnation in which she is positioned; it is to be in defense of equity. To be a woman is to commit oneself to deconstructing what has already been instituted and formatted in the social fields, as agents in a collectivity to plead for (re)significations and the breaking of the yoke.
