SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze how and which lexical-grammatical and semantic-discourse resources are used to express attitude during dueling MCs, seeking to understand how evaluations construct meaning in the genre in question in light of the Appraisal System (Martin, 2000; Martin and Rose, 2003 [2007]; Martin and White, 2005). Such a theoretical approach falls within the scope of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen, 1999; Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014). In this sense, the Transitivity System, a LSF category, proves to be relevant, since ideational meanings can also imprint an evaluative charge. In relation to MC duels, also called MC battles and rhyme battles, our main theoretical sources are: Pimentel (1997), Rose (1994), Shusterman (1998), Marques (2013), and Teperman (2013). The rhyme battle is a genre of the oral sphere linked to the universe of hip-hop and rap, whose origin dates back to verbal games of African origin, such as the dozens and signifying. Generally, the participants who engage in these disputes are young people, mostly from the suburbs, who want, besides having their voices heard, to show off their skills with words. To visualize this evaluative movement within this practice, we selected six duels from "Batalha da Escadaria," a competition that has been held since 2008 in downtown Recife, one of the most traditional in Brazil. Sixteen MCs are drawn to participate in the competition and face each other until a winner is reached. After choosing the battles, which were available on Youtube and occurred in 2018, 2019, and 2020, the transcription process began. Then, there was the marking of all evaluative items and, finally, their classification according to the categories of the Appraisal System, namely, affect, judgment, and appreciation. The analysis shows a high degree of judgmental evaluations, making us realize that the MC tends to build a positive image of himself, using resources that focus on his ability and competence; some material process acquires, in these moments, an agentive semantics. Referring to their opponent, MCs usually associate them with lack of rhyming skills and lack of content, so it is common to use mental processes in order to question their opponent's cognitive capacity. Another issue revealed concerns the use of comparisons with personalities, characters, and institutions to make evaluations. The MCs focus on a certain characteristic of the referenced object to attribute it to themselves or to their opponent, trying, in this way, to direct the gaze of the public that follows the event. We saw that the category affection worked as an auxiliary in the construction of these personas. In relation to appreciation, the items rhyme and rap are evaluated as text and discourse, which referred to aspects related to form as well as to content. The activity of evaluating, taken by Martin and White (2005) as intrinsic to human reality, gains relevance in the battles to the extent that it is configured as a fundamental tool for the MCs to show themselves superior to each other. It is through evaluations that several strategies are mobilized to mark the differences between opponents.
