SUMMARY:

This research aims to describe the syntactic-discourse behavior of the clitic pronoun me in personal letters from northeastern Brazil: Recôncavo da Bahia and Sertão de Pernambuco. The corpus from Pernambuco consists of 120 letters, dated between 1956 and 1977, while the material from Bahia has 99 missives, written between 1911 and 1958. In order to investigate the semantic and syntactic properties of the use of me, we employ a study that encompasses the descriptions of the functions performed by this pronoun in traditional grammars, descriptive and linguistic studies, along with the analysis of the multiple functionalities of the pronoun me. This is done through functionalist studies, concerning sentence transitivity and the concept of sentence, and through traditional and descriptive grammars that present, respectively, categorizations and descriptions for our research object. As well as, current linguistic studies. The work is based on functionalist research and valence theory and was conducted under the assumption that the clitic me, commonly classified as direct and indirect object, has functions beyond those described in grammars, which categorize it insufficiently. For this, we used Halliday and Matthiessen (2014), Fuzer and Cabral (2014), Neves (2012) and Hopper and Thompson (1980), and, of the Valency Grammar Theory, addressed in Welker (2005), Rodrigues (2007), Perini (2007) and Neves (2000). In this way, we aim to broaden the studies of this particle and try to understand how it works. As methodology of analysis, we analyze the classifications and descriptions given to the clitic me, and analyze how the functions performed by me interfere in pronominal placement in the data from the two regions. From the analyses, we observed that the clitic me fulfills other syntactic-discourse functions that are not covered in the traditional and descriptive grammars analyzed in this work.  We noticed, in the same way, that some aspects of this element are little investigated in current research, since they no longer contemplate the assumptions of valential predictability and certain discursive situations. Moreover, in line with our initial hypothesis that proclisis is a trend, in the data from the material from Bahia we had more use of proclisis, a material with a temporal cut earlier than the material from Pernambuco, a proclisis with more generalized use.
