SUMMARY:

We widely know that Portuguese is the official language of all the countries that make up the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and that, unlike what happens in Brazil and Portugal, where their respective varieties are widely studied academically, in some countries Africans or in the Asian country that belongs to that community, there is still a lack of studies on this language. Considering the specific case of Guinea-Bissau, a country to which we focused our attention in our research, we identified the phenomenon of nominal number agreement with a variable behavior, according to the criteria of linguistic rules established by Labov ([1972] 2008) and verified by Paraiso (2019). Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate the linguistic use and attitudes towards nominal number agreement in the Guinean variety of Portuguese, focusing on the repercussions of linguistic contact with other languages in the country and the implications of this scenario in the sociolinguistic identity of the Guinea-Bissau Portuguese-speaking Guinean citizens (PGB). Therefore, we base our investigation on the theory of Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV [1972] 2008) to analyze the variable occurrence of number agreement in the noun phrase; in the Social Psychology of Lambert and Lambert ([1966] 1981), to interpret the linguistic attitudes of informants and understand the processes of identification with a language and, thus, the formation of a sociolinguistic identity; and, still, in the reanalysis of the nominal agreement of number, by Scherre (1988), in order to verify the factors that influence the variation of the phenomenon in question. Methodologically, we conducted interviews with PGB-speaking Guinean informants based on Pissurno (2017) in order to obtain speech data that represented this use; as well as the application of a sociolinguistic questionnaire (based on LAMBERT and LAMBERT [1966] 1981; and on CARDOSO; 2015) and a linguistic perception test, both in the same form on the Google Forms platform. In this collection instrument, we also inserted a text production proposal, which allowed us to obtain both perception data and other production data (writing one). Partial results indicate that, despite the PGB being evaluated positively in most situations shown in the applied perception test, the identification with this variety of Portuguese is presented: 1) in an instrumental way (as a form of social ascension); 2) with acquisition after the age of five and only at school; 3) occupying the place of third language (L3) of most informants; and 4) only when its use is mandatory, otherwise, the language of sociolinguistic identity is Creole or an ethnic language, considering the analyzed social aspects.
