SUMMARY:

Tarallo (1983, 1985), in his diachronic studies on the relatives of Brazilian Portuguese (BP), states that at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, in Portuguese, only two relativization strategies coexisted, these called the standard strategy (piedpiping) and resumptive strategy. With regard to the innovative strategy, called p-chopping, appears in BP, in the mid-twentieth century. From the analysis of strategies of relativization from the perspective at the interface between the perspectives of Quantitative Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972) and Principles & Parameters (P&P, CHOMSKY, 1981, 1986), Tarallo (1983, 1985) states that innovative strategies, resumptive and p-chopping, emerged in the linguistic system from the syntactic change in pronominalization strategies. Furthermore, in European Portuguese (EP), the relative piedpiping would be highly productive, on the other hand, innovative strategies, according to Peres and Móia (1995) would be, in general, ungrammatical in EP - sometimes present in orality. With regard specifically to the p-chopping strategy, Peres and Móia (1995) state that it would be related to the possibility of the existence of Left Dislocation (LD) structures, understood as topic structures in BP (PONTES, 1987). However, investigations such as those by Alexandre (2000) have shown that, in EP, educated and non-educated speakers frequently use the resumptive strategy and the frequency of use of relative p-chopping has also increased. Therefore, according to the studies by Pontes (1987), the occurrences of sentences with left dislocacion in BP are increasing. In this sense, Kato and Nunes (2014) state that, because the non-standard relatives (resumptive and p-chopping) are generated in LD, consequently, there has been an increase in the use of relative resumptives and p-choppings in BP. Thus, like Kato (1993) and Kato and Nunes (2009, 2014), in this thesis, it is believed that the non-standard relativization strategies are related to the raising of the relativized constituent to the left of the sentence, converging with the proposal Kayne´s raising (1994). It is assumed, then, that not only the piedpiping is due to movement, but the three strategies are due to syntactic movement and that the main difference between resumptive and p-chopping would reside in the fact that the relative resumptive have a null pronoun (pro) in the position of object, belonging to the clitic system whose function is to resume (KATO; NUNES, 2009, 2014). Considering these and other studies on the relativization strategies of BP and EP, this thesis is inserted in the theoretical-methodological perspective of Historical Sociolinguistics in interface with the Principles & Parameters (CHOMSKY, 1981, 1986) to seek to understand quantitatively and qualitatively how the three restrictive relative strategies behave in personal letters and newspapers, in these more specifically the editorial genres, news and reader's letter, from Pernambuco of the 19th and 20th centuries, considering that each textual genre of this has, in its compositional structure, traditional ways of saying and which corresponds to the writing of a certain period of society, serving as testimonies for approaching face-to-face communication (KOCH; OESTERREICHER, 1996; KABATEK, 2006). Thus, as a result of the preliminary analysis, considering the intra and extralinguistic variables present in the personal letters of Pernambuco, from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century, we realized: a) the presence of the resumptive pronoun, especially in SU constructions ; b) significant increase in resumptive and p-chopping strategies, while the frequency of use of piedpiping decreases over time; c) empirical evidence that the element in DE can be taken up by the pro null or realized; d) increased retention of pronouns in main clauses and the presence of pro null in the p-choppings in personal letters from the 19th to the 21st centuries.
