SUMMARY:

Avalovara, novel written by Osman Lins and published in 1973, has a structuring that draws the reader's attention from the beginning of reading. The analysis of this structure is the center of this work. More than just analyzing this structure, we aim to observe its aftereffects on the novel, as a literary genre. From the assumption that Avalovara's self-reference and selfconsciousness makes it a work attentive to its own nature, we intend to resort to this structure to reflect on the possibilities and impossibilities of the modern novel. To settle the basis of the debate about the genre, we notably resort to Georg Lukács, Ian Watt, Mikhail Bakhtin and Anatol Rosenfeld. After this succinct macroscopic foundation, we will analyze the transformation of the novel in the 20th century, paying special attention to the experimental and disruptive element that marks the period — element that, we believe, allowed the emergence of a novel such as Avalovara. Then, considering the fact that Avalovara uses the restriction of its own creative freedom to exercise it, we will reflect on the challenging nature of this attitude — paying attention to the repercussions of this behavior inside and outside the mentioned novel. To accomplish this goal, we draw parallels between Osman's work, Nouveau Roman and the french group Oulipo. The last one, specifically, gives us the concept of contrainte, fundamental to the subsequent inquiries. From the careful analysis of the two narrative cores that deal with the crafting of the novel, we will make some observations about the rigorous method of the author and its implications on the novel universe. For the end, we will observe how the constraint mechanisms and other aspects of Avalovara (such as the representation of reality, the self-reference and the relation between subject and cosmos) makes a challenge to the modern novel, as a genre and literary structure.
