SUMMARY:

The thesis focuses on the comparative study of the works The Meursault Case (2013), by Algerian writer and journalist Kamel Daoud and The Stranger (1942), by Albert Camus.  Daoud performs what I call a "post-colonial parodic translation" of the Camusian classic, so the aim of this study is to problematize the possible resignifications operated by Daoud's fiction in relation to the French text regarding two central aspects. The first is his suggestion of a revision and supplementation of the traditional criticism around The Stranger, based mainly on the (almost unilateral) reading that the novel would be an arm of Camus' philosophical thought, whose emblematic concept is the "absurd", present in The Myth of Sisyphus (1941), so that the Algerian novel also offers another prism of reading the French work through the "gap" of the gender issue, linked to the coloniality of power. The second aspect, in turn, consists in the re-significations introduced by Daoud regarding points (which become, here, analytical marks) such as: the representations of Arab alterities in the narrative, crossed by the post-colonial conjuncture; the redimensioned configurations of the sacred and Islamic religiosity; the weaving of geographical images of the diegesis as elements of local memory; the representations of gender in the contemporary Algerian fictional conjuncture. The research follows theoretically the field of Postcolonial Studies, with emphasis on the thought of Edward Said (1995), Stuart Hall (2003), Walter Mignolo (2008), Anibal Quijano (2005), Edgardo Lander (2005), Inocencia Mata (2016), Maria Lugones (2008), as well as is aligned with the notion of "parody" from the perspective of the "poetics of postmodernism" by Canadian Linha Hutcheon (1999) and with the theoretical category of "translation" as understood by Eneida Souza (1993), João Alexandre Barbosa (2005), and Else Vieira (1992). The study is organized in four chapters. In the first, I discuss the contributions of Postcolonial Studies to the construction of the analysis developed; in the second, I present a reading of how Daoud's work illuminates points of review of the critical tradition around The Stranger, sectored particularly in three central names: Sartre, Barthes and Edward Said; in the third, I supplement the traditional critical field with an updated re-reading of the Camusian novel, bringing the problem of gender, based precisely on the contours of Daoud's fiction and its critical sifting through the dialogism it establishes with Camus's classic. In this perspective, I follow the line of Postcolonial Studies (QUIJANO, 2005; LUGONES, 2008) and feminist criticism, as conceived by Zinani (2015). In the fourth and last chapter, I finalize the approach to the intertextual relationship between Daoud and Camus, focusing on the postcolonial parodic translation of The Foreigner operated by the Algerian writer, investigating the analytical markers listed above. Finally, I present the final considerations, pointing out the importance of The Meursault Affair in the contemporary peripheral literary field, not infrequently crossed by insistent tensions between Algeria and France, concerning, above all, the issue of Arab immigration and Islamism.
