SUMMARY:

Ronaldo Correia de Brito, an important name in contemporary Brazilian literature, presents a diverse production. The writer, who also dedicated years to the practice of medicine, something that is reflected in his creation, works as a chronicler, novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Primarily a theater director, he later directed for cinema. He has been an art curator and has coexisted with notable plastic artists. In different ways, Brito is familiar with the imagetic universe. The media often highlights the visual content of his narratives. The growing interest in his work as a source for film adaptations is also noteworthy. A variety of the prose writer's short stories reproduce his movement of drawing inspiration from images, introducing them, and (re) inventing them. This thesis analyzes how the dialog of the author's short stories with the image takes place in its variations. To do so, it goes through a repertoire of short narratives published in different collections. Especially, it investigates the interrelation of his texts with photography. In the afterword of the book Retratos Imorais (2010), the storyteller explores the presence, in particular narratives, of deliberate interactions with the visual creations of three photographers. Thus, this study examines the short story “Homem Folheia Álbum de Retratos Imorais” in light of the publication of the Brasília Teimosa (2007) photographs, by Brazilian Bárbara Wagner. It also discusses the text "Romeiros com Sacos Plásticos" in terms of its dialogue with the photographic work À La Quête de Lange: Ícones du Quotidien (2005), by French photographer Patrick Bogner. In addition, it analyzes how Brito echoes images by Canadian Robert Polidori in the narrative "Two Women in Black and White." It is found that the intimate bond with the image manifested in Brito's texts goes beyond the question of visuality. As prose marked by the crossing of other artistic languages, textual productions are directly influenced by imagetic art such as cinema. In this way, procedures typical of the Seventh Art reverberate in the author's narrative construction. Regarding the interface of his short stories with photographic art, the different types of connections made by the writer with disparate visual productions give rise to specific analytical investigations. The first comparative study demonstrates how Brito, in his creative appropriation of Wagner's photographs, pushes and refines the use of ephrasing as a strategic resource to reinforce the properties of the narrative system. The second comparative analysis attests to the expressiveness and processuality achieved in the rewriting of the short story when the author is affected by what for him represents the punctum of Bogner's images. In this case, the obtuse nature of the punctum as a sign unattached to a single sense is accentuated. The third approach, which brings Brito's writing to Polidori's production, notes different dimensions of the image from the time profiles expressed in the tale. In common to the three studies of the narratives, there is the reverberation, in some way, of the notions of multiplicity, web, fluidity, process, and openness. Particularly, we emphasize how useful the concept of the rhizome, by Deleuze and Guatarri (2004), presents itself to the discussion. By tracing a panorama of Brito's short narratives, in the pursuit of issues related to the imagetic motif, this thesis reinforces the author's versatility in familiarity with other artistic expressions, which encompass complexities. New looks may take advantage of or redirect the signals indicated here.
