SUMMARY:

This work investigates the phenomenon of nominal number agreement (henceforth NNA) in the spoken and written language of students from Pernambuco (Brazil) and Portugal through atomistic and non-atomistic analyses. This is a variationist sociolinguistic study which is based on both functionalist and variationist principles, according to Scherre (1988). Linguistic and extralinguistic variables were selected to verify which of them influence the most the marking of plurality in noun phrases. To this end, a sample of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) was collected in Pernambuco, in particular of spoken and written Portuguese. A total of 22687 data sets were collected (speech data: 18603; writing data: 4084) from 360 students from two public schools and one private school in each of the cities studied (namely Recife, Carpina, Belo Jardim, Petrolina, and Serra Talhada). Subjects were in the 6th grade of elementary school and in the 1st and last years of high school and duly classified according to age, education, sex, and type of school. The sample of European Portuguese (EP) consisted of 4901 data sets (speech data: 4307; writing data: 594) from 36 participants from Lisbon and 28 from Algarve, with age and education level similar to those of the Brazilian subjects. Participants from Lisbon are students at a private school and from Algarve are teenagers who are part of the Boy Scout Movement. Based on the types of linguistic rules proposed by Labov (2003), through data analyses in the Goldvarb X software, it was observed that the rule of NNA in BP is variable according to the atomistic and non-atomistic analyses of speech in each city from Pernambuco. On the other hand, for EP, the atomistic analysis was categorical for both cities. In the non-atomistic analysis, however, Algarve and Lisbon presented semi-atomistic and categorical rules, respectively. Considering the writing data, in the atomistic analysis, BP presented a semi-categorical rule in all locations, while in the non-atomistic one, it presented a variable rule in Carpina and a semi-categorical rule in the other cities in Pernambuco. Regarding EP, data from Lisbon presented categorical and semi-categorical rules in the atomistic and non-atomistic analyses, respectively, while Algarve obtained a semi-categorical rule in both analyses of the writing data. In general, few cancellations were observed in the EP data compared to the BP data.
