SUMMARY:

In his thesis, we study the journalistic receptions of the two last novels written by Brazilian writer Rachel de Queiroz: Dôra, Doralina (1975) and Memorial de Maria Moura (1992). The corpus is composed not only by the literary works of the author, but also by notes, news, reports, bestsellers lists and articles of literary criticism conveyed in the main Brazilian newspapers and magazines when both novels were published. The articles are the most important material of our research. By considering these fresh opinions on the novels, we analyse what judgements on Queiroz’s works were made in periodicals of the second half of the 20th century. During that process, it was possible to identify the locus of the novels when facing the trends of that time, as well as the constant remarks in the press Queiroz deserved during her 70 years of literary activity. A clipping of our vast bibliography shows the importance of the following critical and theoretical sources: (a) Reader-Response Criticism, with Zilberman (1989) and Jauss (1994), who helped us to understand how a literary work is received by its primary public, when it is published; (b) Regionalism in Brazilian Fiction, with Leite (1978), Almeida (1999), Coutinho (2004), Candido (2011) et al., who made it possible to judge how Queiroz’s works were classified; (c) Narratology, with Genette (2017), Reuter (2004; 2014), Bourneuf and Ouellet (1976), all of them present in our analyses of the novels; (d) the History and Development of Literary Criticism in Brazil, with Coutinho (1986; 1987), Martins (1986; 2002), Rocha (2011) et al., to whom a panoramic chapter was dedicated and who, afterwards, were employed to verify the press activity during the last decades of the 20th century. A brief biobiography of the author was displayed; it was mainly based on the press articles that took her on consideration. When analysing the critical works on Dôra Doralina and Memorial de Maria Moura, we also offered our own views on the books, many times in contrast with the first impressions which appeared in the press
