SUMMARY:

Through this study, we propose a critical sociocognitive analysis of the discourse produced about an issue that mobilized different sectors of the city of Recife: the repurposing of the area of José Estelita wharf. From an interdisciplinary perspective that conjugates Critical Discourse Studies in a sociocognitive approach (VAN DIJK, 2010; 2012), Network Studies (CASTELLS, 2001; 2009; LÉVY, 1996; 1999), Social Movements Studies (GOHN, 2008; CASTELLS, 2015) and Linguistic Anthropology (MOTTA, 2002), we analyze the discourse produced by the two groups in dispute – represented by the Novo Recife project and #OcupeEstelita movement -, understanding that discourse is not a mere expressive or communicative instrument, but constitutive of social practices and configurations, which, in turn, constitute discourses (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001; MARCUSCHI, 2003; 2004). The operationalization of this relation is carried out through the sociocognitive aspect, a necessary interface between discourse and society (VAN DIJK, 2000; 2010; 2012; MARCUSCHI, 2003; 2004) in order to explain how discourses work towards the structuring of society and vice-versa. Hence, news pieces from the two highest circulation newspapers in Recife (Jornal do Commercio and Diario de Pernambuco) are analyzed, as well as the posts in both Novo Recife’s and #OcupeEstelita’s Facebook pages, and the comments in relation to these posts. We have come to realize that, since the expansion of the usage of social network websites, a new perspective towards the journalistic institution and its relation to the public, now more active in agenda setting, is necessary. Virtual media have presented effects in the power relations, in (de)stabilizing hegemony, in the processes of (de)legitimation and in the (re)production of knowledge (CASTELLS, 2001; 2009). Therefore, we investigate the impact of social network websites in sociodiscoursive practices once stabilized, and now rearranged by the emergence of this “new”, apparently more democratic, space for interactions, the virtual space. We postulate, thus, that #OcupeEstelita, through the social media websites, notably Facebook, seeks to destabilize the traditional journalistic practice, positioning themselves as an alternative news source on the Cais José Estelita theme, whilst fighting for its own legitimation. Through the analysis of the discourses produced by #Ocupe and Novo Recife, in their respective Facebook pages, as well as the comments posted on these pages, we were able to verify which and how the disputing discourses about the warf, the city, the concept of citizen reverberate through society.
