SUMMARY:

The primary objective of this thesis is to reflect on the discourse about “Social Gender, Sexualities and Sex” in the Portuguese Language Textbook. Initially, taking as its support the Dialogical Theory of Language based on the Bakhtin Circle, the notion of Textbook was defended as a discourse genre, ideologically constituted and ideologically elaborated for equally ideologized utilities and uses. It is understood that the manual itself is a discourse, which weaves discourses about all the objects it deals with, guiding their perception from points of view that find in the compositional, thematic and stylistic characteristics of the book mechanisms of reaffirmation and erasure operated ideologically. Second, keeping the Bakhtinian basis of language studies, the analytical focus was oriented to Brait's concept of verb-visuality (2012a, 2012b). Such episteme contemplates a different understanding of text, as well as dialogic inter-relational experience of discourses, focusing on the Textbook as a text and a discourse that operates in different semiosis in its work on pedagogy of the social world. Then, Queer Studies and Applied Linguistics were allied to Dialogic Theory in order to build a transdisciplinary epistemological framework that observed the concepts of “Social Gender”, “Sexualities” and “Sex” according to sociohistorically situated discursive notional perspectives. This with a view to investigating movements in the book either towards the naturalization of these issues as situated within a logic in which “right” and “wrong” would be spontaneous, or towards building them as a culturally and ideologically determined construct. Such a journey in order to erect the theoretical-methodological collective necessary to investigate the ways in which the Portuguese Language Textbook addresses “Social Gender”, “Sexualities” and “Sex” as discourses. These are constituted by and advocate in favor of ideological positions that have in the manual, understood as a statement, a projection mechanism of these directions as pedagogized truths explored as part of the school experience of Brazilians. Therefore, the Portuguese Didactic Book: Linguagens, authored by William Roberto Cereja and Thereza Cochar Magalhães, had its collection for High School selected for discursive analysis, with a qualitative character. In view of being one of the best-selling collections in the country and participating in all editions of the PNLD from 2005 to 2015, and having been the work submitted to notices that endorsed identity issues and legitimizing minority speeches in classrooms and in its materials , texts in which the combination of verbal-visual resources was identified were contemplated. Through the textual materialities that combine illustration with writing, the corpus was scrutinized through the lenses of Dialogic Discourse Analysis with the aim of understanding the ideology underlying the discursiveness of "Social Gender", "Sexualities" and "Sex" as teaching content and learning from the book. Therefore, the research results state that the Textbook, in the specific context of the assessed collection, presents a non-innovative proposal concerning thematic exploration in the classroom, not promoting essential issues for citizenship education registered in the LDB, PCN, OCEM and in the PNLD. The manual responds to these guiding documents in a tactical way, in a way that follows up historically elaborated deletions for the body and identities, as well as reinforces naturalistic, biologizing ideologies, to the detriment of social construction as an epistemology for "Sexual Gender", "Sexualities" and "Sex".
