SUMMARY:

This paper analyzes the literary bases that compose and particularize the memorialistic form in Dom Casmurro (1900) and Memorial de Aires (1908), by Machado de Assis, observing how in these novels memory is a structuring literary device that gives continuity and, at the same time, renews the mnemonic project proposed by Machado in Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas. For this, we revisit the literary pantheon that founded the compositional turn of the author post-1880, namely: the shandism that is a tradition composed by the revitalization of one of the oldest literary formats in literature - the menipal satire. It is known that, initially, it was rescued by Luciano de Samósata with his Lucianic tradition and that, later, it influenced Laurence Sterne, direct heir of the structural aesthetics that revolutionized his and Machado's writing and, according to Sergio Paulo Rouanet (2007), the main responsible for the definition of the categories currently known as the Shandian form. Thus, in order to explore such extensions, this study was anchored mainly in O riso e a melancolia: a forma shandiana em Sterne, Diderot, Xavier de Maistre, Almeida Garrett e Machado de Assis (2007), developed by Rouanet with the intention of expanding the Shandian characteristics punctuated in Memórias Póstumas, in the narratives of Bento Santiago and in that of Councillor Aires, noticing how these, in their conditions of thinking erratic, manage to refunctionalize these properties, which, within the legitimation of the authorial intention, distances itself at certain points from those established by the lines of the defunct-author. With this, it is observed how memory incorporates, in the eyes of Bentinho and Aires, a transfiguring tool, and even a lyrical one, of cosmovisions that reify, from a capricious subjective contingency, time, space, and textuality in the digression and fragmentation of a melancholic laughter that ironizes the language of narratives traditionally constructed as copies of reality. Therefore, the study gathered in this dissertation turns to the laurels of Machado's literary tradition, seeking to understand the pillars of mastery that sustained the stubborn and diplomatic production of one of the Brazilian writers who best knew how to unravel man and his limitations.
