SUMMARY:

Brazilian Portuguese presents particularities that differentiate it from other languages, such as the possibility of an anthroponym being accompanied or not by a definite article: “o João” and “João”. However, we can find a third variant of this phenomenon: a form in which the article does not present the same grammatical gender as the anthroponym, as “a João”. This variant has an emergent character and has been found in LGBT+ speech, being explained as a speaker's mark to expose both their feeling of belonging to the community and its causes (PEREIRA, 2020). Therefore, we developed an empirical study to verify the subjective evaluations of university students from Recife about this last variant, based on sociolinguistic studies that controlled the subjective evaluation of their informants (LABOV, 2008 [1972]; CARDOSO, 2015 [1989]). For this purpose, we developed two data collection instruments: a questionnaire with objective questions – to obtain belief data – and another containing a judgment test with a scale, more specifically the Likert scale – to obtain attitudes data –, which were judged by 60 informants, stratified according to two control variables: gender self-identification, understood here as a social construct, and sexuality, understood as an affective-sexual orientation. The results of this research point to the fact that we are facing a phenomenon that has significant interference from one of the two variables, namely: sexuality: individuals belonging to the LGBT+ community have linguistic beliefs and attitudes highly favorable to the controlled variant, while those who they do not belong to the community tend to go the opposite way. This result, then, supports our hypothesis that favoring this variant is related to the individual's sense of belonging.
