SUMMARY:

The connections between discourse and culture have become, in recent decades, the focus of numerous investigations, located in different fields of knowledge, which demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue for the apprehension of the phenomenon. This work presents a reading of this connection from the intersection between the fields of French Discourse Analysis and British Cultural Studies, both materialist in orientation. From the first field, the theoretical contributions of authors such as Michel Pêcheux, Eni Orlandi and Alice Krieg-Planque on the relations between language and history are taken up; from the second, the proposals of Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and Richard Johnson on the relations between culture and communication. The objective is to understand the role played by culture in the construction of women's representations in journalistic discourse. The object of investigation is a set of three women's periodicals produced in Penedo (AL), in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Culture is seen as a structure that works between the production and reproduction of reality. For the analysis of women’s representations, the existence, in the period, of a maternalist discourse built from religious and medical knowledge is considered. Furthermore, the dominant image of the “beautiful sex”, as a way of defining women, is identified as the basis on which the press's statements are built, either to reinforce it or to contest it. The analyzes present two distinct discursive functionings in the periodicals. The first of them, marked mainly in the periodical A Palavra (1888-1898), is characterized by an overvaluation of the woman-mother image, defending her role in the formation of future country's citizens, but based on a moralizing determination. The second functioning, located mainly in the newspapers A Flor (1909) and Alvorada (1910), is characterized by the contestation of the religious discourse linked to the image of the woman, seeking to signify her in an association with other roles, especially those linked to the social movements of the period, like the suffragette movement and the demands for access to the professional world. From this contradictory functioning of gender discourses, we argue in favor of considering culture as an object marked by a paradoxical functioning, highlighting its importance in the establishment of political clashes that take place through the fights of meanings in each conjuncture.
