SUMMARY:

This work investigates how the referencing of discourse objects and the construction of the point of view contribute to the (re)construction of meanings in cartoonist Laerte Coutinho's comics and how these contents can be taught to work with reading in language teaching. This work is based mainly on referentiation theory, in the point of view theory and the conception of reading with a socio-cognitive and interactional basis according to Koch and Elias (2011[2006]), Menegassi (2010) and Antunes (2003). Regarding the first theory, we align ourselves with the socio-cognitive and interactional approach to reference construction (Mondada and Dubois 2019[1995]). In this theoretical model, we understand that referentiation is a dynamic and complex process of constructing referents that portray reality (Koch and Marcuschi, 1998; Cavalcante, Custódio Filho and Brito, 2014; Cavalcante et al. 2020; Cavalcante and Martins, 2020). In turn point of view theory presents an enunciative and interactional bias and seeks to understand how perspectives and perceptions are constructed by subjects about objects (Rabatel, 2015; 2016[2008]; Cortez, 2011; 2013). In this context, we are guided by the fundamental assumption that one of the strategies for constructing a point of view is referentiation (Rabatel, 2016[2008]; Cortez, 2011). Regarding the methodology, we adopted a qualitative approach based on the inductive method (Gil, 2002; Taquette and Borges, 2020). We selected six comics for analysis that were divided into two groups: comics from the first phase (referring to the initial phase of the gender transition) and comics from the second phase (referring to the later phase of the gender transition). To develop the pedagogical part, we carried out field research, in which we developed and took to the classroom a didactic proposal that articulates the theoretical assumptions of the work with the reading of comics that are part of our corpus. This practical part of the research, carried out in a high school in the city of Serra Talhada, in the backlands of Pernambuco, enabled the generation of three materials: activities, production of posters and reports that were produced by the students. Our analyzes show that there is a greater incidence of recategorizations in humor-building situations in Laerte's comics from the first phase, as well as that the perspective of the character Hugo (referent) appears largely as upset and dissatisfied, as opposed to Muriel who is viewed as happy. We also observed that there is a greater incidence of dissonant points of view (POVs) in comics from the second phase, while there are more consonant POVs in comics from the first phase. In relation to the practical part of our research, the materials generated show the development of a critical reading on the part of the students regarding the theme of transphobia that permeates the comics covered in the activities.
