SUBALTERNITY AND POWER IN THE WHITE TIGER: analysis of the novel and its film adaptation

Comparativism; Literature and Cinema; Indian Literature; The White Tiger.

This master's thesis aims to analyze the homonymous works The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (2008) and the homonymous adaptation (2021) by Ramin Bahrani, placing them in dialogue and establishing a common thread that involves literature and cinematographic adaptive processes. The novel raises social issues, such as caste, social position and subalternity, and criticizes them through the main character's point of view. Therefore, starting from this point, we will address the propositions present in the novel and how these aspects are represented in the film, which uses techniques specific to this medium as narrative tools. The theoretical discussions on the field of adaptation include Hutcheon (2013), Stam (2008), Ahmed (2015), Bose (2007), Peres Júnior (2012), Schulze (1995) and others. We also highlight theorists who deal with the subject of Indian English-language literature, such as Morton (2007), Mukherjee (2000), Mukherjee (1981), Valdez Moses (2001) and West & Rushdie (1997). On the subject of colonization and its implications for the subject, we consulted Spivak (2010), Bhaba (2013), Hall (1997), Lahiri (2013), Maldonado-Torres (2004), Said (2004) and others. On the caste system and Dalit literature, we turn to Ambedkar (2014), Pawar (2008).The choice of these specific works is due to the intention of contributing to literature studies and their transposition into other media. The importance of this work lies in the need to create a space for debate that highlights the dialog established between artistic, literary and filmic expressions.
