SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the development of the heroes created by Gilvan Lemos, specifically in three novels: "Noturno sem música" (1956), "Os olhos da treva" (1975) and "Morcego Cego" (1998), from the perspective of the Bildungsroman, or Novel of Formation. The primary objective is to assess the extent to which these novels may be interpreted within the framework of the Bildungsroman concept, taking into consideration both the similarities and distinctions in relation to this literary genre, which chronicles the journey of a hero towards their exemplary formation.  According to Maas (2000), the Bildungsroman represents a minimum canon and is often reinterpreted by various literary productions. The methodology employed in this research is qualitative in nature and is based on a bibliographical review, using the theoretical concepts of Maas (2020), Mazzari (1999, 2010, 2020), Moretti (2020), among others. The results obtained reveal that the heroes created by Lemos in the novels analyzed do indeed go through a process of formation, however, they fail to complete it in an exemplary manner. This is largely due to the historical and social context of modernity in which these characters are inserted, which prevents complete harmony between their internal development and external demands. As its main contribution, this study enriches the critical analysis of Gilvan Lemos' work and broadens the debate on the Bildungsroman genre.
