SUMMARY:

Discussions about gamification are gaining more and more space within the area of education. In English language learning, gamification employs game mechanics such as points and rewards to increase engagement and motivation. This approach offers benefits such as greater engagement, motivation and active learning. Gamified activities provide instant feedback, autonomy and practical use of language, exposing students to cultural nuances. Textbook activities may not meet the need for engagement among students, and consequently, may not have the expected effect. Our research used as theoretical support the studies of playfulness by Huizinga (2019), approaches to language teaching, mainly by Leffa (1999), Kumaravadivelu (2003), Richards & Rogers (2003). To this end, with this research, we aim to create a gamified learning trail, adapting 3 activities already existing in an English language texbook for the 1st year of new high school and placing emphasis on the speaking practice, as it is one of the least common skills worked on high school teaching materials. Our work was conducted using bibliographic and documentary research methods, as in addition to critically analyzing the activities already existing in the textbook, by other authors, we created activities of our own authorship. The expected results of our research come from the critical analysis of the entire learning path and activities in the book, making constructive criticisms of the objects of knowledge, texts, images and approaches that the book gives to the orality axis. We hope that our research will help other English language teachers to embrace gamification in their teaching practices.
