SUMMARY:

This thesis focuses on the agency of female characters in two novels: So Far from God (1993), by Ana Castillo and Com armas sonolentas, by Carola Saavedra (2018). The definition of agency used here is the one of the anthropologist Laura M. Ahearn (2001), who characterizes it as the capacity of socioculturally mediated action. Thus, my objective is to analyze the agential processes, that is, the characters decision-making and actions that are permeated by the sociocultural context of each one of them. So, this thesis is divided in a way that one chapter is dedicated to each character, as each one mobilizes their action in different situations, which provided the exploration of sub-themes such as motherhood, wandering, the transits, violence, identity, spirituality, community, ancestry, cultural heritage, capitalist exploitation, social history, racism, patriarchy, among others, all analyzed from a feminist and decolonial perspective. Thus, I conclude that the two works represent women who, regardless of the bias of their actions — be they attitudes of resistance, existence or co-opted by neoliberalism and patriarchy — analyze the context, decide and, especially, act. As pointed out in the title of this thesis, quoting Ana Castillo, the women analyzed here are the kind of species that flies.
